CAT Scan (CT)

Abdomen:
Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours before your exam. You will need to drink 1 bottle of contrast one hour prior to your exam.

Exceptions: There are a few exceptions; if your exam is one of them you will be given different instructions at the time of scheduling.

Abdomen / Pelvis:

Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours before your exam. You will need to drink 2 bottles of contrast prior to your exam; the first bottle of contrast should be taken three hours prior to exam and the second bottle one hour prior to your exam.

Exceptions: There are a few exceptions; if your exam is one of them you will be given different instructions at the time of scheduling.

Brain:

Most brain / head CT's require no preparation.

Exceptions: Scans for tumors require you to consume clear liquids only and nothing to eat for 4 hours prior to your exam.

Chest:

Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours before your exam.

Exceptions: Scans for nodules do not require preparation.

Liver:

Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours before your exam. You will need to drink 1 bottle of contrast one hour prior to your exam.

Neck:

Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours before your exam.

Urogram:

Nothing to eat 4 hours before your exam.  Drink 32 oz. of water 2 hours prior to your exam.

The following CT's do not require preparation:

  • Extremities
  • Facial Bone
  • Spines 

* IV contrast patients: a 12 hour allergy prep is required if you are allergic to iodine. Please be sure to tell us at the time of scheduling your appointment.
